Job Description:
Syracuse University has joined with the University of Texas at Austin in directing the United States Policy Agendas Project. The Policy Agendas Project is an academic initiative aimed at collecting and coding government activities in the United States to enable researchers, policymakers, and citizens to track changes in policy processes and outputs over time.
The Campbell Institute at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University is seeking a Postdoctoral Scholar (postdoc) to manage a group to collect and organize policy data in the areas of Media, Interest Groups, Public Opinion and the Budget. The postdoc will lead a small group of graduate and undergraduate students in weekly policy coding sessions, meeting weekly coding goals and participating in meetings that ensure uniformity of the data collection. The postdoc will report to Campbell Director Chris Faricy and collaborate closely with faculty, students and staff involved in the Policy Agendas Project at Syracuse University.
This is a two-year position as a postdoctoral researcher.
Qualifications:
ABD or PhD in political science, economics, public policy or a related field. Experience and training in quantitative social science methodologies is required.
Job Specific Qualifications:
- Postdoctoral Researcher should have experience with large scale data collection, management, and analysis with R or Stata, including cross-sectional time-series data.
- Training or experience with computational social science methods and automated text analysis is also preferred, but not required, as is experience working with the Policy Agendas Project or the Comparative Agendas Project.
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills, capable of translating complex scientific findings into clear, non-technical language for publications and professional presentations.
- Strong team player, effective in communicating with colleagues and faculty.
- Proficient in interacting with individuals at all levels, maintaining flexibility, proactivity, tact, resourcefulness, and efficiency under pressure, while upholding high standards of professionalism and confidentiality.
Responsibilities:
The Postdoctoral Researcher will be primarily responsible for organizing and executing the updating and expansion of the US policy agendas project categories in the areas of Media, Public Opinion, Interest Groups, and the National Budget.
The postdoc and their graduate and undergraduate students will meet weekly coding goals. It also involves running a weekly resolution meeting with graduate students at the University of Texas that handles any intercoder disputes so as to ensure coding consistency.
The postdoc will also work with Chris Faricy on creating a United States Policy Agendas Project website housed at the Maxwell School. In addition, the postdoc will head up training sessions on using the US Policy Agendas Project both at Syracuse University and with other partners. The postdoc will assist Chris Faricy with working up applications for funding opportunities related to the Policy Agendas Project.
The postdoc will be responsible for answering queries and questions relating to the project data housed at Syracuse University. The postdoc will be encouraged to spend 33% percent of their time on their own research agenda. Other duties and ad-hoc projects and analyses as assigned.
