Under the direction of the Executive Director of Communications and Marketing or assigned supervisor, the Director of Public Relations will manage the college's public relations initiatives. This position involves building and maintaining relationships with media, community, and community leaders, creating and curating impactful content and delivering compelling storytelling that positively shapes the conversation surrounding the college. The director will help develop and implement comprehensive media relations strategies that align with the college's mission, vision, and values. These strategies will cover internal and external communications, including reputation management, crisis communication, social media management, content development, and event planning.

Representative Duties

1. Lead external public relations and develop internal communication strategies and marketing initiatives.
2. Develop and execute an annual communication and public relations plan to reach key stakeholders, conveying the unique positioning of the college to drive brand awareness and develop a positive reputation.
3. Supervise the Marketing and Public Relations team to ensure program success and efficiency.
4. Serve as the point of contact for media inquiries, proactively engaging with reporters and journalists, particularly in the education space.
5. Collaborate with the Executive Director or assigned supervisor and senior leadership to craft strategic messaging for speeches, presentations, and earned media opportunities.
6. Assist with crisis communication, including preparing talking points, statements, and responsive media strategies for key college leadership.
7. Oversee the creation of presentations for both internal and external audiences, ensuring alignment with the college's messaging and branding strategy.
8. Assist and implement a content distribution plan to ensure content reaches the right audience through various channels.
9. Provide technical expertise to the college president, vice presidents, and support staff regarding communication and public relations; advise on current and future marketing issues impacting the college, its personnel, and operations.
10. Write and edit copy for a wide range of publications and communication vehicles, including the Bakersfield College website, brochures, invitations, emails/mailings, magazines, reports, newsletters, etc.
11. Manage content such as graphics, photography, video, and text to ensure it remains relevant, current, and has a consistent style and voice; ensure appropriate metadata is maintained for the content; manage the clearance and proofreading processes for all college content publishing.
12. Monitor and assist with managing an annual budget.
13. Manage and maintain college social media presence. Utilize analytics to assess performance and adapt strategies as needed. Train faculty and staff on appropriate use of social media; monitor social media channels to ensure compliance with guidelines.
14. Assist in recruitment, selection, orientation, and evaluation of support staff in the marketing department.
15. Distribute news releases to all appropriate media, act as liaison between faculty, staff, and media, arrange news conferences, television and radio appearances, and news interviews.
16. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications


  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college/university, or equivalent, preferably in public relations, journalism, communication or marketing. Proof of significant experience in public relations, marketing or media may be substituted in lieu of degree requirement.
  • Minimum 3 years' experience in public relations, marketing, and communications
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, and disability backgrounds of community college students and employees.


Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Terminology, best practices, and procedures involved in developing, implementing, and conducting public relations, strategic communications, marketing and brand awareness activities.
  • Digital marketing tools and content management systems.
  • Principles, practices, and techniques involved in the research, organization, composition, and design of news releases, newsletters, and informational materials.
  • Methods of collecting and organizing data.
  • Mastery of interpersonal skills and discretion in high pressure situations.
  • Print and electronic media.
  • Command of the English language; correct usage of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary.
  • Operation of computers, desktop publishing equipment, and appropriate software.
  • Record-keeping and report preparation techniques.
  • Public speaking techniques.

    SALARY RANGE

    $ 110,679.78 - $ 156,387.63 Annually

    Maximum Entry Level Salary: $116,282.94 Annually
