Medical Services at CU Boulder encourages applications for a Laboratory Assistant I! This role performs a diverse range of tasks to aid in the testing and delivery of laboratory specimens. This includes completing various laboratory procedures such as phlebotomy, capillary puncture, and other specimen collection methods and adhering to all quality, safety, and emergency protocols and guidelines established by The University of Colorado Boulder. The person in this role will exhibit excellence and efficiency in work practices and clinical procedures during interactions with patients, peers, healthcare providers, and management. The role ensures patient safety during the preparation and administration of care, including medication handling, procedures, infection control, and fall prevention, consistently employing two patient identifiers and procedural time-outs. This position promptly reports safety concerns, accidents, incidents, and hazardous working conditions.

The Medical Clinic provides a wide range of health care services for students including: primary care for illnesses and injuries, as well as chronic conditions, physicals, sexually transmitted infection testing and treatment, allergy shots, vaccinations, travel health care, and concussion care.


What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be


Provider Support/Patient Care/Customer Service:
  • Adhere to established procedures for specimen collection, encompassing tasks such as conducting drug screens, biometric screenings, and insurance exams. Implement the administration of oral solutions following prescribed training protocols. Carry out data entry and processing of specimens, including labeling, centrifuging, splitting, and freezing specimens as specified by test orders. Assist with various departmental clerical duties when assigned, such as data entry, inventory management, stocking supplies, and providing phone support as necessary. Aid in compiling and submitting monthly statistics and data reports. Maintain all relevant phlebotomy logs promptly and according to schedule, such as maintenance logs and temperature records. Familiarize oneself with and adhere to departmental policies, protocols, and procedures outlined in manuals such as Procedure Manuals, Safety Manual, Compliance Manual, Automobile Policies and Procedures, Employee Handbook, and Quality Assurance Manual, ensuring staff compliance. Conduct verification of patient demographic information and initials, including acquiring patient signatures post-venipuncture to confirm tube labeling in their presence and the correctness of the name on the label. Perform Point of Care (POC) testing at designated sites as needed, undergoing requisite training and competency evaluations as per Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). Deliver effective onboarding services to new Wardenburg staff members.

LIS Documentation:
  • Responsible for documenting and ensuring billing for students is accurately added in the laboratory LMS/LIS system. As well as assisting in the adherence of the CLIA and AAAHC standards.


What You Should Know


This is an on-call, in-person position whose working hours are variable during regular business hours (Monday through Friday, 8:00 am - 6:00 pm).

Hourly salary range: $22.61-$25.61 per hour.

What We Require

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Phlebotomy certification from an accredited institution.
  • One year of phlebotomy experience required.

  • Attention to detail and prioritization skills.
  • Good computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft office.
