Job Description
The University of Tennessee, Knoxville is seeking a dynamic and experienced individual to join our leadership team as the Director of Advising for the Tickle College of Engineering. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Academic & Student Affairs, this critical role will lead the Advising department, ensuring that our students receive exceptional guidance and support throughout their academic journey. The College: The Tickle College of Engineering provides 11 BS degrees, 16 MS degrees and 13 Ph.D. degrees through 7 departments. The College has a common freshman program administered by the TCE through the Engineering Fundamentals Directorate overseeing the general Engineering Fundamentals and Engineering Honors Programs. The total number of undergraduate students is over 3500 with over 1000 freshmen. The TCE has more than 170 tenure-track faculty. More information is found: Tickle College of Engineering .
Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide leadership and strategic direction for the Advising department as well as provide support and information to the Dean and Associate/Assistant Deans on matters that concern undergraduate students, analysis of academic probation to contribute to retention and success, and curriculum development needs or changes.
- Oversee the development, improvement, and implementation of advising programs and services as well as compliance with university policies and procedures related to advising.
- Collaborate with college departments, faculty, staff, and administrators to enhance student success initiatives and remain informed on policy changes, federal guidelines, and university initiatives.
- Manage and lead an overall team of 16 Advisors, 1 Associate Director, and 1 Administrative Assistant, providing mentorship and professional development opportunities.
- Serve on committees that have a direct relation to the role and duties.
- Utilize data-driven approaches to assess and improve advising practices.
- Foster a supportive and strategically successful environment for all students.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Higher Education Administration, Counseling, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in academic advising or a related area with demonstrated leadership as well as supervision skills and experience.
- Strong understanding of advising best practices and student development theories.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders.
- Proficiency in using advising software and data management systems such as Salesforce, Banner, Excel, SIS, and Microsoft 365 (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in a large public university setting. Preferably in an academic advising unit.
- Knowledge of UTK's departments, systems, and processes.
