Job Summary

Disability Services (DS) encourages applications for an Access Coordinator! The DS team envisions a fully accessible, integrated, and universally designed campus community. This position works with other Disability Access Coordinators and departmental team members to ensure effective program and service delivery occurs in alignment with established processes and guidelines. This position provides direct service to faculty, students, and staff of the university, and requires a collaborative approach within the department, division, and entire university community.
This position determines and grants appropriate academic accommodations, adjustments or auxiliary aids and services for students with disabilities in the post-secondary setting which requires expertise in interpretation and application of disability law. This position supports students with disabling conditions by assisting in identifying campus resources, development of self-advocacy skills, development of appropriate academic strategies, and navigation of the diverse and complex campus community.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Determining Accommodations
Collaborate with students in building a network of available resources to improve participation in the university community and the larger community related to student needs. Determine appropriate program response and degree of advocacy needed to students, faculty, staff, or others in compliance with federal, state, and local legislation and case law, and university policies. Review documentation with regard to currency, completeness, and appropriateness in accordance with ADA, Sections 504 and 508, the ADAAA, Fair Housing Act and Disability Services documentation guidelines. Determine appropriateness of documentation submitted and whether requests for accommodations in the classroom or for examinations, including assistive technology and programmatic access, in the housing, dining and parking areas are supported by the documentation. Determine and communicate accommodations based on diagnostic information, current impact in the post-secondary setting, reasonableness of the request, standards of practice and student request, including breadth and depth of prescriptive intervention strategies based on diagnostic information. Review diagnostic test results, discuss requests based on results, then work individually with students to formalize an accommodation plan.
Guidance and Referral
Advise students with respect to skills and issues in the following areas: rights and responsibilities regarding academic accommodations with regard to legal parameters of the ADA, Sections 504 and 508, the ADAAA, Fair Housing Act and Disability Services and university policies. Advise with regard to academic requirements, self-advocacy, career issues specific to disabling conditions and needs, university rules/regulations/policies. Make decisions with consideration of referral to ancillary resources, both on and off campus, as necessary. Determine when and how to provide written and verbal communications on behalf of students to be supportive of the students within the legal parameters and established departmental standards of practice. Provide information sessions, phone or email responses to prospective students and their parents regarding program philosophy, university requirements, expectations and support services available in the larger university community.
Disability Services, University and Community Resource
Provide consultation services, in-service training and programming about disabilities to the university, local and state communities with respect to definitions, perspectives, implications, applications of professional research, disability as diversity, state and federal laws, transition to and from post secondary. Provide cultural programming about issues related to disability and diversity. Provide leadership coordination for projects such as web maintenance, student leadership, mentoring, specialized workshops, assistive technology, diversity, departmental liaisons, student surveys, university proctoring, etc. Represent DS as a participant on various university committees.
May be asked to assist in other areas of the office when needed, including supporting special projects, coverage of the front desk and assistance with proctoring exams.
Professional Development
Attend and present at professional conferences, workshops, lunch and learns, seminars, training sessions, or professional organizational meetings. Stay abreast of current research in the field by reviewing publications, journals, technical information, etc. Summarize and synthesize new information to exchange with colleagues either in a written or oral manner. Anticipate future needs and trends of post-secondary disability issues.

What You Should Know

  • This position will work in a hybrid work modality.
  • This position's anticipated schedule is Monday through Friday during regular business hours. There will be occasional weekend and evening hours required.

The salary for this position is $55,000 annually.

What We Require

  • Bachelor's degree in education, special education, psychology, rehabilitation, counseling or closely related fields, or equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.
