Job Description:
(1 week of staff training, 6 weeks of summer programming)
Description: 7 weeks, Monday- Friday typically from 8:00 AM - 5:00PM, hours and days however, this varies due to the needs of the assigned summer site (residential or non-residential) at an hourly rate of $19.00. This position is temporary and subject to termination at will with or without notice or cause and is contingent on grant funding and U.S. Department of Education approval.
Program Description:
The Harvey Mudd College Upward Bound Program is a federally funded program designed to help low-income, potential first-generation college students generate the skills and motivation necessary to complete a program of secondary education and to enter and succeed in a program of postsecondary education. High school students form the East San Gabriel Valley participate in Upward Bound during the school year and the summer. During the academic year, students participate in weekly tutorials at their high school and monthly programs on the Harvey Mudd College Campus. During the summer students a staff of instructors and tutors led by a coordinator, instruct and supervise the students in various summer sites.
Calendar: Dates and times may be modified slightly.
Staff Training Week from (9AM- 5PM):
June 9-13, 2025
- Rigorous schedule: workshops and structured activities 9am-5pm;
Orientation Week (8AM-5:00PM, hours will vary)
June 16-20, 2025
- Responsibilities include classroom supervision, student recreation and community activities, driving students as needed and continued staff training sessions
Summer Programming (hours and dates will vary, depending on site
June 22 - July 25, 2025

Coordinator Job Responsibilities:
The coordinator represents the director at the summer site and therefore, has broad responsibilities for all aspects of program management. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Supervising the overall effort of students and staff to create a challenging but supportive academic and personal environment promoting self-esteem, critical thinking, cultural and ethnic awareness, and an enthusiasm for college level education
- Ensuring that the students and staff conduct themselves in a safe and responsible manner at all times and responding to and managing emergency situations in the name of the director
- Facilitating communication between staff members and students and maintaining daily communication with the central office in Claremont and the project director
- If applicable, management of internship component including leadership during internship preparation seminars, follow up on student journals, distribution and collection of evaluation instruments, and coordination of staff follow up visits to mentor
- Representing the project director and the program to host parents, campus officials, internship mentors, and any other community representative and officials
- Managing the on-site budget and financial resources and coordinating employment administrative procedures such as paycheck distribution, filing of worker's compensation cases, etc.
- Coordination of staff designed and led cultural enrichment, recreation and other non-academic activities
- Coordinating the daily and weekly schedules and other logistics at the site including transportation, room and board, and resource and facilities management, based on the site needs
- Supervising, monitoring and evaluation of site instructors and tutors
- Supervision and coordination of study halls
Like all staff members, coordinators are required to participate in all aspects of the summer program including recreation time, cultural enrichment activities, study hall, driving, meals, and internship supervision.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree required; masters preferred
- A minimum of two years full time, administrative and/or instructional experience at the high school or college level or significant experience in residential settings
- Demonstrated ability to organize, plan, and supervise
- Demonstrated success working with youth groups, particularly historically underrepresented students
- Knowledge of the psychological, behavioral, and educational issues affecting the learning potential of low-income, potential first- generation college bound youth
- Possession of personal characteristics appropriate for summer programming and instruction (such as sensitivity, sense of humor, resilience, compassion, and the ability to establish good rapport with program participants)
- Experience in a residential setting preferred but not required, when site requires residential
- Educational and/or economic background similar to target population preferred but not required
- Spanish speaking skills preferred but not required
- Basic CPR and First Aid Certification preferred
Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the staff member is regularly required to sit; stand, use hands and fingers and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. The individual must regularly lift and/or carry up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
