Job Description
The Assistant Director will be part of the team of the Boston University Newbury Center, which provides programming, resources, community, and support for first-generation undergraduates, graduate students, and professional students. The Newbury Center is part of the BU 2030 Strategic Plan Pillar, Community, Big Yet Small, and is a nationally recognized, university-wide, centralized center which reports to the Associate Provost of Community and Inclusion in the Office of the Provost. It has an extensive reach collaborating with a broad range of constituents including faculty, staff, administrators, alumni, and external partners who support first-generation student success. This position will report to the Associate Director of the Newbury Center.
The Assistant Director will be responsible for:
(45%) - Programming Assistance
- Developing, planning, implementing, assessing, and/or facilitating professional and personal development workshops/workshop series in alignment with first-generation student needs. This requires collaboration with constituents both on and off-campus.
- Leading specific signature events and initiatives as they are developed as part of the Newbury Center's overall program and outreach to students.
(30%) - Student Advising/Mentoring
- Assisting the executive director and associate director with the student caseload/individual appointments that arise from students in crisis or their need for advising and mentoring.
(15%) - Newbury Center Operations
- Assisting the executive director, faculty director, and associate director with reporting, communications, and other administrative tasks as they arise.
- Collaborating closely with the associate director, program administrator, and the student staff to assign various tasks, responsibilities, and projects.
- Assisting the associate director in overseeing the Newbury Center daily operations, especially in the executive director's absence.
- Representing the Newbury Center on various university-wide committees/working groups and with external constituents, as requested by the executive director.
(10%) - Other duties as assigned
Required Skills

- Bachelors Degree required; Masters degree in higher education and student affairs or a related field, e.g. counseling, MSW, is preferred.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience advising and working directly with students from diverse backgrounds is required.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and event management experience is required.
- Direct experience working with first-generation student populations at the undergraduate, graduate, and professional student levels is preferred.
- Knowledge and awareness of issues that first-generation students from diverse backgrounds encounter throughout their educational experience; familiarity with current scholarship and trends in first-generation student research; and a working knowledge of student development theory and the intersectionality of identity framework is also strongly desired.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills, including the ability to write well and to deal effectively and diplomatically with various constituencies; attention to detail is necessary.
- The Newbury Center is a fast-paced and dynamic environment. The associate director must work independently and efficiently, make decisions using excellent professional judgement, manage sensitive/confidential information discreetly, anticipate the Newbury Center needs, and prioritize responsibilities effectively.
