The University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine (PennVet), Department of Clinical Sciences and Advanced Medicine, Section of Surgery, Dentistry and Oral Surgery Service (DOSS) invites qualified individuals to apply for an open faculty position in the Clinician Educator (CE) track at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Applications are currently being accepted until a suitable candidate is identified. The successful candidate is expected to have history of or potential as an exemplary clinician, educator, researcher, and academic leader in their field. Members of faculty in the CE track yearly perform 29 weeks of clinical patient care in PennVet's Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital and participate in the clinical and didactic teaching of veterinary students, interns, and residents. The CE faculty member is expected to contribute to their field through scholarship that brings new knowledge and advances their field.

For this position, the successful candidate will join Penn Vet's existing DOSS. The DOSS employs two (AVDC) board-certified specialists (successful candidate will be second CE faculty member) in support of the program. There are 3 residents enrolled in the residency training program. Clinical service responsibilities will include provision of patient care and supervision of day-to-day operations of the service. Teaching responsibilities will include didactic and laboratory instruction of pre-clinical veterinary students, small group and didactic instruction of clinical veterinary students rotating through the service and mentoring of dentistry and oral surgery residents. In addition to student rounds and separate clinician rounds, the DOSS holds resident rounds, journal clubs, board review lectures, and laboratories. More than 30 Diplomates of multiple American and European certifying colleges, who are leaders in their fields, support the DOSS. The Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital is a dynamic and intellectually stimulating environment with an excellent nursing staff and house officers. The successful candidate will enjoy a wealth of opportunities that will enable the fulfillment of their responsibilities in a highly collaborative, outstanding clinical environment within a busy academic teaching hospital (www.vet.upenn.edu/about/what-we-do/pennvet-leads). The newly renovated Richard Lichter Advanced Dentistry and Oral Surgery Suite reopened in November 2024. State-of-the-art Olympic Hi-Lo adjustable height surgical tables were installed to offer advanced docking systems for integration of dental equipment and surgical tools and provide greater efficiency during procedures. In addition, video capture systems - complete with boom mounted pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras, 55-inch 4k displays, and live video streaming capabilities - were added at every surgical station to facilitate Penn Vet's innovative student and resident learning experiences. A space was also established for a Xoran Technologies vTRON cone beam CT unit. Penn Vet's DOSS is a recognized leader in periodontal surgery, endodontic and prosthodontic therapy, jaw fracture repair, orofacial oncologic surgery, palate defect repair, and various forms of oral and maxillofacial reconstruction. The proposed CE position opens new opportunities for research and educational collaborations across campus. The University of Pennsylvania offers a highly interactive campus-wide biomedical research environment. Penn Vet's DOSS, Penn Dental, and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia have a history of collaboration, and there is interest towards deepening these relationships further.
