Position Emphasis:

The University of Colorado School of Medicine seeks a physician of unique vision, enthusiasm, and experience as Vice Chair of Education, Department of Surgery. The ideal candidate for the leadership role is an academic physician with expertise in medical education a strong background in program building, curricular design, and a deep understanding of ACGME requirements and objectives. This leader will drive improvement informed by goals established by the Department of Surgery, University of Colorado School of Medicine to fulfill the department's mission to be a leader in delivering high-quality medical education across multiple campuses. The primary responsibility of the Vice Chair for Education is to oversee the complex educational mission of the Department, including the coordination of faculty and trainees involved in that mission. This oversight includes educational initiatives across the spectrum of activities related to undergraduate medical education (UME), graduate medical education (GME) at both residency and fellowship levels, and professional development such as continuing medical education (CME) and other faculty development programs. The Vice Chair is also responsible for several major conference initiatives annually, including scheduling and coordinating Medical Grand Rounds. Finally, the Vice Chair of Education is responsible for all educational grant programs run through the DOS, including the faculty-focused Program for the Advancement of Clinician Educators (PACE) as well as the fellow-focused Medical Educators grants. The Vice Chair must exhibit the qualities required to be a successful and compassionate leader in a complex, matrixed environment, including working collaboratively across various organizations.





Examples of Work Performed:

Educational Leadership and Advocacy
  • Support the Chair and Executive Vice Chair in cultivating a culture that values and advances educational initiatives, serving as the primary Departmental advocate for enhancing and investing in these endeavors and guaranteeing alignment of educational programs with Department values, especially regarding diversity, equity, inclusion, and access.
  • Provide guidance, assistance, and leadership to a diverse group of leaders involved in DOS educational programs to improve the educational experience of learners and promote educational innovation and advancement.

Strategic Planning and Budget Management
  • Advise the Chair and Executive Vice Chair on educational priorities, funding requirements, recruitment, and infrastructure needs.
  • Collaborate with the Vice Chair of Administration and DOS Director of Education to establish and manage annual budgets for all educational programs.

Compliance and Evaluation
  • Liaise with ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education) and other regulatory and accreditation organizations, ensuring compliance with all standards governing educational programs.
  • Develop and implement procedures for evaluating and reporting on the performance of faculty and trainees, as well as oversee the evaluation processes and metrics of educational programs to ensure continual assessment and enhancement.

Faculty Development and Engagement
  • Supervise educational research initiatives in conjunction with the DOS Vice Chair of Research.
  • Orient new faculty, residents, and fellows to their roles and responsibilities in education and teaching, foster a culture of faculty engagement in DOS educational initiatives, and offer support and mentorship to faculty members with a specific interest in education.
  • Assess and evaluate the educational contributions of individual faculty members to ensure fulfillment of the Department's educational objectives, encourage faculty to maintain comprehensive records of their educational contributions for promotion and tenure purposes, and collaborate with division leaders and educational program heads to acknowledge exceptional teaching performance.
  • Manage faculty development efforts related to education, including training on effective teaching methods, assessment techniques for trainees, and delivering constructive feedback.

Community Building
  • Raise awareness among faculty about institutional and national opportunities for advancing educational leadership and expertise.
  • Convene regular meetings of the DOS educational community through an educational leadership group to facilitate optimal planning, innovation, integration, and communication across all educational programs.

Other Key Responsibilities
  • Support the Chair in creating a conducive environment for educational activities and learners, acting as the primary advocate for the enhancement and resources of the training programs.
  • Offer comprehensive oversight, support, guidance, development, and empowerment to a diverse group of leaders within our educational initiatives, including all residency programs, as well as all ACGME and non-ACGME specialty fellowship programs within the Department, at affiliate hospitals of UCH and CHCO.
  • Recommend strategies to the Chair regarding educational program priorities, financial requirements, recruitment strategies, and the necessary support infrastructure.
  • Engage with leaders and faculty members across all of our training sites (Anschutz Medical Campus, CHCO, VA, Denver Health, National Jewish) to ensure a coordinated and consistent educational experience.
  • Lead and support the recruitment of clinician educators, acclimatize new faculty to educational roles and responsibilities, cultivate a faculty culture of participation in educational programs, and offer mentorship to faculty members keen on medical education or those pursuing educational careers.
  • Encourage faculty to explore institutional and national professional development opportunities for educational leadership and skills.
  • Engage in philanthropy events and initiatives aimed at generating support for educational programs, involving alumni and faculty.
  • Act as the Chair's delegate on committees concerning education, when necessary, or as appointed by the Chair.
  • Collaborate with UCHealth and other department vice chair leadership to share best practices in medical training and explore interprofessional education opportunities.
  • Supervise Associate Vice Chairs of Education in areas of specialization and program development

Minimum Qualifications:



Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

This is an open-ranked position and could be categorized as Associate Professor or Professor, based on experience and qualifications as indicated below:



Associate Professor:
  • MD or MD/PhD, or international equivalent terminal degree with board certification Colorado Medical License at time of hire.
  • Medical Board certification.
  • Mid-career associate rank.

Professor:
  • MD or MD/PhD, or international equivalent terminal degree with board certification Colorado Medical License at time of hire.
  • Medical Board certification.
  • Full Professor rank.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • A minimum of 5 years of UME or GME educational administrative experience with a proven track record of educational leadership and excellence in teaching
  • Previously a Director of Surgery Residency Program or similar educational leadership role
  • Experience with a nationally top-ranked surgery residency program

Anticipated Pay Range:

The hiring rate (or budgeted rate) for this position has been established at $80,000 and is eligible for a $16,000 merit based incentive, annually.



This position may also be eligible for other administrative stipends or salary support from the School of Medicine for educational roles related to the position of Vice Chair of Education.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
