SDSU Imperial Valley
Founded in 1959, SDSU Imperial Valley (SDSU-IV) offers 12 bachelor's, three master's degrees, including recently launched B.S. degrees in Public Health and Nursing. SDSU-IV is structured as a college within San Diego State University but functions as a branch campus approximately 125 miles from the main campus in San Diego. With generally small classes, SDSU-IV provides an intimate educational experience. Most SDSU-IV students are from the Imperial County border region (more commonly referred to as "Imperial Valley"). Due to its proximity to the Mexican border, the campus serves a student body composed largely of groups that are historically under-represented in higher education. Given its border location, responsive curriculum, and commitment to community engagement, SDSU-IV offers opportunities for both local and global research agendas. Research centers and initiatives housed at SDSU-IV include a Borderlands Institute, the RISE (Research Innovation & Student Engagement) Center to address health disparities in the region, and the Sustainable Energy Center (SEC) to promote renewable energy research, education, and training. The Calexico campus, less than a two-hour drive from the SDSU main campus, is located on an eight-acre city block in the heart of Calexico's civic center near the US-Mexico border. The Imperial Valley region consists of the Calexico, El Centro, and Brawley micropolitan areas along with several other small towns within Imperial County which has a total population of approximately 180,000 residents. The campus is also proximate to tribal lands in Southern California and southwest Arizona, affording research opportunities for candidates interested in working with these populations. A new, $80M STEM campus is currently being constructed in Brawley. Please visit the SDSU Imperial Valley website for more information, https://imperialvalley.sdsu.edu/
SDSU-IV Division of Arts and Sciences

The Division also contributes to knowledge and the solution of projects in the Imperial Valley and beyond through excellence and distinction in teaching, research, and service. Many of our graduates go on to be leaders and agents of social change in their communities. New degrees are expected to be launched in Chemistry and Electrical Engineering in Fall 2026, with a new minor in Chicana and Chicano Studies being launched this Spring 2025.
SDSU Department of Psychology
Psychology faculty at SDSU-IV have a dual appointment with the Department of Psychology at San Diego State University. Psychology is the #1 major at both the SDSU Imperial Valley and San Diego campuses. Faculty on the Imperial Valley campus can advise and mentor M.A. students through their joint appointments. The SD campus also offers an M.S. Program in Applied Psychology with tracks in Industrial and Organizational Psychology and in Quantitative Methods, and the joint SDSU/UCSD Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology is consistently ranked among the best in the nation.
