Laboratory Manager

Effective immediately: Full-time Laboratory Manager – College of Health Professions and Natural Sciences - Wilmington University.

Requirements:
A Master's Degree is required. Natural Sciences Discipline (Molecular Biology, Biology, Chemistry, or closely related discipline preferred). The incumbent must have a minimum of 1-3 years: of providing leadership to natural science laboratories and/or coordinator of natural science labs for undergraduate and graduate students, serving as a Chemical Hygiene Coordinator in industry or academia, and demonstrating excellence and commitment to supporting a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment.

The incumbent must have a solid understanding of standard laboratory safety procedures for both chemistry and biological labs. Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work effectively with a diverse population are essential. The role requires someone who is self-directed, capable of making independent decisions, and able to work under the guidance of the Academic Director. Strong written and verbal communication skills are a must, along with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment. The ideal candidate will be an independent, solution-oriented thinker with strong problem-solving abilities. A commitment to fostering effective working relationships, maintaining professionalism, and ensuring confidentiality in all situations is crucial. The incumbent should be computer literate and proficient in Microsoft Office. Must demonstrate respect for diversity in the workplace and a commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive work environment that values the contributions of all employees.

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
  • Provide oversight of daily natural science lab preparation including setup and breakdown of lab experiments at Wilmington University locations.

  • Prepare chemical solutions, biological media, and lab materials in accordance with established industry safety standards.

  • Maintain inventory and coordinate purchases of lab equipment and supplies, ensuring quality and fiscal responsibility.

  • Monitor and ensure regular maintenance of lab equipment.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for natural science faculty related to lab materials, procedures, and equipment utilization.

  • Collaborate with faculty and academic leaders to research and develop innovative labs for face-to-face courses, online courses, and student research projects.

  • Research and develop proposals for lab equipment and green alternatives.

  • Manage the natural science lab budget including securing bids and negotiating vendor contracts in collaboration with the Division Director and Academic Dean.

  • Serve on the Natural Science Division curriculum committee.

  • Support Wilmington University's Institutional Priorities.

  • Demonstrate high levels of competence in oral and written communications with all stakeholders (students, faculty, staff, administration, and the community).

  • Manage chemical inventory, labeling, and storage in accordance with established OSHA and MSDS safety standards.

  • Coordinate the safe disposal of hazardous chemicals and waste.

  • Monitor, maintain, update, and enforce chemical lab safety policies, procedures, and protocols in accordance with established OSHA and MSDS safety standards.

  • Ensure functionality of lab safety equipment (e.g., eye wash stations, and chemical fume hoods) in accordance with established OSHA and MSDS safety standards.

  • Lead University Chemical Hygiene Safety meetings.

  • Promptly address lab safety concerns in collaboration with the Academic Director and Dean.

  • Provide lab safety training for faculty and students.

  • Promote and foster an inclusive and diverse environment for all students, faculty, and staff.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Academic Director and/or Academic Dean.

Hours of Employment: Generally, Monday – Friday. The Natural Sciences Lab Manager will be expected to have an on-campus presence in Wilmington University labs Monday through Friday. Hours may be varied depending on the needs of the department(s) and/or the University. The incumbent must maintain a flexible work schedule. Travel to other Wilmington University sites is required.
