Postdoctoral Research Associate

About the Opportunity

The EcoBioMaterials Design Lab is seeking a postdoctoral research associate in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Northeastern University, Boston, MA, USA. Our lab is an interdisciplinary team of engineers, scientists, and researchers applying humanity-centered design principles to create functional, sustainable, and benign materials, with emphasis on plastics. This position focuses on investigating the interactions of nucleic acids and synthetic polymers as sustainable/green alternatives to conventional small molecule plastic additives.

The duties and responsibilities for this position may include, but are not limited to:
  • Formulate and characterize nucleic acid-polymer systems
  • Design, implement, and analyze repeatable, high-throughput experiments
  • Provide meticulous documentation, analysis, and summarization of results
  • Foster a safe, collaborative environment
  • Develop and write reports, publications, and grants
  • Attend and participate in group meetings/seminars
  • Participate in career development training workshops/sessions and networking opportunities for research and mentoring
  • Guide and mentor graduate or undergraduate students, including participation in training to improve these skills as needed.

We value diversity and expects all lab members to foster a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment. It is expected that the postdoctoral research associate will develop and execute a career development plan in coordination with the PI.

Qualifications:

Must have a Ph.D. or equivalent in polymer chemistry, molecular biology, or related engineering discipline; experience with material characterization techniques; be able to undertake substantially full-time research or scholarship; work under the supervision of a senior scholar. All candidates should describe how they support a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment inside and outside the laboratory. This position requires excellent communication skills, both interpersonal and scientific, oral and written.

Preferred Qualifications:

Candidates should be enthusiastic about working in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary, and multi-project environment. The successful candidate will be able to work both independently and collaboratively. Detailed knowledge of bioengineering, polymer science, and/or chemical informatics is a considerable asset, as is experience with synthetic nucleic acids and green chemistry and engineering.

About the EcoBioMaterials Design Lab:

Our ambitious research group is led by Assistant Professor Bryan James and opened in January 2025. Our overarching goal is to design functional, sustainable, and benign materials with emphasis on plastics. To achieve this goal, we leverage interdisciplinary collaborations across chemical and materials engineering, environmental science, and biomedical science. The research group has unique capabilities to comprehensively characterize the environmental degradation and toxicity of materials. We work within a supportive team environment with trainees ranging from high school students to postdoctoral associates.
