Job Description
The Senior Line Installer assists in the installation, operation, and maintenance of a large high voltage distribution system for the UT Knoxville campus. This position is responsible for the inspection of equipment on a regular basis in order to maintain the safety of students, staff, and the general public. This individual will provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, will fill in for the foreman during absences, and train other employees as necessary.
Responsibilities
- Inspects, maintains, and installs high voltage electrical systems and related components including but not limited to transformers, switches, switch gear, substation, and line work above and below ground
- Perform diagnostics, maintain, or repair all electrical HV systems on campus
- Ensure reliable operation of all critical research and laboratory electrical systems distributed to campus buildings
- Coordinates duties with crew in the absence of the foreman and instructing them in the use of tools and materials
- Studies blueprints, taking off materials, inventorying stock, and ordering materials
- Studies technical manuals and equipment information to improve knowledge and understanding of all the campus electrical systems and associated equipment
- Complete training to maintain and update skills and knowledge, to assist contractors, other shops, and to be able to instruct and assist junior personnel in proper procedures and daily work
- Assists with the inspection and repair of outdoor lighting systems and sports facility lighting
- Work alongside other departments and craft disciplines in assisting the completion of reported problems and assignments
- Report job information to supervision including any repairs, issues, deficiencies, and needed parts to correct the assigned problem on lighting and all electrical systems
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Education:
- High school diploma or GED
- Electrical Apprenticeship and/or electrical distribution
- Valid TN CDL Class B Driver's license
- Experience:
- A minimum of five years' experience in high voltage or as a journeyman in high voltage distribution, construction, and maintenance techniques
- Experience with proper safety requirements and procedures
- Experience working in a team atmosphere.
- Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- A good working knowledge of all electrical and distribution system practices.
- The ability to read blueprints.
- The ability to work on live high voltage and electrical system components when necessary.
- The ability to climb poles, sports lighting poles, and structures.
- The ability to work in confined spaces, under adverse conditions, and in high places.
- A good working knowledge of high voltage tools, equipment, and machinery.
- The ability to perform hard physical work for long periods; to lift, pull, and, push heavy loads.
- CPR training and other safety skills as required by OSHA.
Preferred Qualifications
- Education: Associates degree in a related field
- Experience: Seven years' experience in high voltage or as a journeyman in high voltage distribution, construction, and maintenance techniques. Specialized experience with fifteen kilovolt underground systems.
- Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Experience in electrical distribution or Journeyman electrician work, electrical safety training, formal training in basic and advanced electrical skills or equivalent experience.
