Position Summary

San Diego State University's Bursar's Office is looking for an Accounting Technician II to assist with student account inquiries and perform essential back-office duties. If you're passionate about helping students and ensuring smooth financial operations, we want you on our team!

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist students, parents, other customers, and university staff with student account inquiries and resolve related issues via telephone, in person, email, or Zoom.
  • Address questions related to payments, refunds, financial aid, billing, or any other student account issues.
  • Supervise, hire, and train student assistants if needed.
  • Collaborate with other departments to resolve issues or answer questions.
  • Create and/or provide informational materials or sessions for students, parents, staff, or others.
  • Understand and communicate university, state, and federal rules and regulations to students, parents, and staff.
  • Perform back-office duties such as processing refunds, printing checks, performing reconciliations, running reports, and printing bills and statements.

Position Information
  • This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position.
  • This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.
  • Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
  • The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Department Summary

The Division of Business and Financial Affairs (BFA) is at the heart of some of the larger projects on campus in recent years, including the construction of Snapdragon Stadium, as well as the implementation of my.SDSU on campus. As part of BFA, the Department of Financial Operations is responsible for the financial and budgetary controls and procedures of the University and is directly responsible to the Vice President for Business and Financial Affairs. The Associate Vice President for Financial Operations has responsibility for Budget and Finance, Procure to Pay, Audit and Continuous Improvement, Shared Services, and the University Controller's Office, which includes the University Bursar's Office, Accounting Services, Financial Reporting, and Financial Systems Management and Analysis.

The University Controller is responsible for the maintenance of the University's budgetary, receipt and disbursement (expenditure) general and subsidiary ledgers for all University Funds. Through the Accounting Services and Financial Reporting Departments, the University Controller oversees and coordinates the analysis, reconciliation and reporting of all financial transactions of the University, including cash receipt processing, student refunds, financial aid disbursements, billing/collections and reconciliations, and management of the diverse services provided by the SDSU ID Card as performed by the SDSUCard Office. The University Controller is responsible for internal and external reporting including Legal/Budgetary Basis, Financial Information Record Management System (FIRMS) and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). The University Controller reports directly to the Associate Vice President for Financial Operations.

The University Bursar's Office is a customer service oriented group that interacts with students on a regular basis. The University Bursar is responsible for University cashiering operations, student billing and collections, the student direct deposit process, campus fee reporting and reconciliation and check printing. Collections and a portion of the fiscal recordkeeping for various loan programs also fall under the responsibility of the University Bursar's office. The University Bursar is also the liaison with the Student Financial Center and the Financial Aid Office, which all work together to ensure our students' financial transactions are properly processed.

Education and Experience

Experience: Equivalent to three years of progressively responsible financial record-keeping experience.

Education: Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.

Key Qualifications
  • Customer service experience.
  • Experience in a university student account or cashiering environment preferred.
  • Experience using enterprise computer systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of financial record-keeping, mathematical and general office methods, procedures, and practices.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $4,129 per month.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,872 - $6,428 per month.
