Job Description

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under an assigned supervisor, regular/contract instructors participate in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs, courses and other experiences that will directly result in the educational growth of the students and support advancement of the visions, missions and values of the college and District. The department has a commitment to the use of technology in education and to integrate curriculum between related scientific disciplines including chemistry, physics, earth sciences, and engineering wherever possible. It is expected that this position will support and help to grow the department in this area. This position may include a combination of day, evening, and weekend assignments, large lectures and small seminars, labs and field trips, and is being offered by a college strongly committed to the "open door" concept serving a diverse student population. Instructors will be expected to perform other duties consistent with their faculty job description as stated in the faculty contract.

CHARACTERISTICS OF ASSIGNMENT:

1. Teach Environmental Biology (Biology 110) and Principles of Biology (Biology 120).

2. Coordinate the multiple sections of Environmental Biology (Biology 110) and Contemporary Issues in Environmental Resources (Biology 112) and support coordination of Principles of Biology (Biology 120) course, including mentoring and supporting adjunct faculty.

3. Maintain, edit and update the Biology 110 lab manual, including working with technical staff to plan lab preps and schedules and printing/graphics and the bookstore to produce the documents.

4. Planning, leading, and participating in student field trips as part of the Biology 110 curriculum.

5. Work with the department chair(s) to facilitate the Student Learning Outcome processes and any necessary updating of course outlines.

6. Coordinate recruitment of student teaching assistants for Biology 110 instructors as needed and of student peer tutors for the Tutoring Center.

7. Develop new Lecture and Laboratory teaching materials and curriculum for Environmental Biology (Biology 110) as needed.

8. Participate in Department meetings and decision-making.

9. Participate in the shared governance process and serve on college committees.

10. Advise students regarding degree requirements and career opportunities in biology and science.

11. Assist in and advocate for better articulation of courses with transfer institutions.

12. Participate directly in regular curriculum updates within the college's curriculum committee process.

13. Provide academic assistance to the students outside of class (e.g., during office hours).

14. Fulfill stewardship of the Biology Department's Wildlife Sanctuary, greenhouse and lath house.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: APPLICANTS MUST MEET ONE OF THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:

Master's in any biological science OR
Bachelor's in any biological science AND Master's in biochemistry, biophysics, or marine science OR
The equivalent.

NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must demonstrate:

1. Academic preparation for teaching and developing curriculum in Environmental Biology (Biology 110) or equivalent general biology course for non-majors in lecture, laboratory, and field settings and in any of the following areas: Ecology, Evolution, Organismal (Plant or Animal), Environmental or Conservation Biology.

2. Experience in the past five years teaching Environmental Biology (Biology 110) or equivalent general biology course for non-majors at the college level with at least four semesters experience each of lecture and laboratory.

3. Demonstrated use of standard office computer software (Word, PowerPoint), the Internet, Canvas (or other learning management system) and laboratory simulation software in an instructional setting.

4. Skills and experience to engage students and work with colleagues from a broad spectrum of cultural, socioeconomic, ethnic, ability and language backgrounds.

5. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing in the English language.

6. Demonstrated commitment to work effectively and professionally with colleagues.

7. Evidence of a strong commitment to remain current in biology, the sciences, and issues related to teaching and learning in the sciences.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates will also be evaluated for qualifications in the following:

1. Academic preparation should include courses in these areas: Ecology, Evolution, Organismal (Plant or Animal), Environmental or Conservation Biology.

2. Experience teaching in the community college setting.

3. Experience writing/developing and/or substantially editing and modifying laboratory activities.

4. Experience with the use of laboratory and field equipment and instruments common to biology teaching environments.

5. Knowledge of, or experience in, developing and implementing effective teaching and student engagement methods that support student learning.

6. Knowledge of or interest in plant biology to assist in the care and maintenance of key campus instructional facilities and direct live collections.

7. Evidence of leadership experience either inside or outside the educational setting.

8. Demonstrated versatility and innovation in intellectual pursuits.

9. Comfort and experience in an outdoor setting.
