Job Summary

The Industrial Hygiene Lab Specialist at Georgia Southern supports the implementation and administration of the university's Chemical Hygiene, Laboratory Safety, Biosafety, and related programs. The Specialist ensures compliance with federal laws, sponsor requirements, and university policies regarding safe laboratory and chemical hygiene practice encompassing appropriate facilities and equipment, training, personal protective equipment, chemical management, and standard operating procedures for laboratory work practice to protect University students, lab personnel, and the environment. This position will support the implementation and maintenance of the required Chemical Hygiene program and is responsible for implementing procedures, recordkeeping, and managing laboratory inspections, accident/exposure investigations, and laboratory training implementation.

Responsibilities
  • Perform routine inspections of teaching and research laboratories, document findings, recommending corrective actions, and follow-up
  • Serve as a liaison between laboratory staff and the following but not limited to:
    • EHS, Bio Safety Officer, and Radiation Safety Officer (or other safety related entities on campus)
  • Provides consultation to Environmental Health and Safety on hazardous materials releases in laboratories as needed
  • Deliver comprehensive laboratory safety training programs and education assistance to faculty and staff
  • Research specific safety and compliance topics to provide guidance
  • Work with laboratory faculty and staff to integrate safety procedures into laboratory operations and promote safe work practices
  • Supports relevant campus safety committees (re: Lab Safety Committee, Biosafety Committee, Radiation Safety Committee)


Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements
  • Bachelors Degree at an accredited 4 year institution in industrial hygiene, environmental health & safety, health physics, chemistry, biology, or a related field

Required Experience
  • At least 1 to 2 years of professional experience in a health and safety profession or in a laboratory setting
  • Experience with OSHA and EPA regulations and their application in a laboratory setting


Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Educational Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in a STEM field

Preferred Experience
  • Experience working in higher education in a laboratory setting Knowledge of use and operation of health & safety monitoring/testing equipment including but not limited to gas monitors and personal protective equipment


Proposed Salary

$55,126 - $65,000

This is an exempt position paid on a monthly basis.

  • Ability to maintain accurate and concise records
  • Ability to respond quickly and effectively to incidents, customer requests, emergencies and site clean ups
  • Ability to use respiratory protection and other personal protective equipment as deemed necessary

KNOWLEDGE
  • Knowledge of chemical compatibility and safe storage

SKILLS
  • Able to be medically qualified to wear respiratory protection devices
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including experience with group presentations
