PROJECT BACKGROUND
California State University, Monterey Bay received $2M for a five-year project with regional partners to develop a climate-ready workforce in the Monterey Bay region. This funding will support 45 paid internships, stipends for six intensive professional masters internships, and additional teaching assistantships and scholarships. This funding is part of a large $71M grant titled Regional Adaptation for Climate Resilience of Monterey Bay Coastal Communities. This funding is sourced from Inflation-Reduction Act Funds to be administered by the California Marine Sanctuary Foundation.
POSITION SUMMARY
We seek a full-time, fixed-term staff position to help with internship outreach, student recruitment and placement, and internship tracking. This staff person will be responsible for recruiting students into the experiential workforce development projects, both undergraduate and graduate. Additionally, this person will be responsible for identifying appropriate internship sponsors and maintaining the records of student placement and completion. This staff person will serve as liaison with the Science Internship Program (SIP) and Undergraduate Research Opportunities Center (UROC) at CSUMB. This staff person will attend all meetings with regional partners such as the Monterey Bay Climate Adaptation Action Network (MBCAAN) formed by the grant. We expect that this position will begin work immediately on internship outreach and recruitment as the project ramps up to its initial phase of internship, scholarships, and course offerings in Summer 2025. This position is funded through the workforce development portion of the Regional Adaptation for Climate Resilience of Monterey Bay Coastal Communities project and not state funding; therefore, employment is provided through the University Corporation at Monterey Bay and not CSUMB directly.
Examples of Duties
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include. but are not limited to. the following:
- Recruitment of graduate and undergraduate students into experiential workforce development projects and assistance with teaching assistantship placements
- Initiate and manage University-Agency Agreements for the Placement of Students (UAAPS) with internship sponsors in coordination the CSUMB Community Placement and Compliance Analyst
- Identify and seek out appropriate internship sponsors for student placements
- Maintain records of student placement and completion, including timesheet approval when applicable
- Serve as a liaison with CSUMB organizations like SIP and UROC and external organizations in the MBCAAN and the California Marine Sanctuary Foundation
- Assist with budget and expense tracking related to internships, teaching assistantships, and scholarships for workforce training skills courses
- Managing digital communications and recruitment, including through social media accounts and direct outreach activities such as presentations to community members
- Administration of student experience surveys related to coursework and internship placements funded by the grant
- Summarization of recommendations from student feedback from surveys for improvement of internship and course offerings over the course of the project
OTHER FUNCTIONS

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
- B.A or B.S. in Environmental Studies or natural Sciences including but not limited to Environmental Science, marine Science, Geoscience, Environmental Studies, or similar.
- Requires 2-3 years' experience in a similar role
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
- Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the CSUMB Vision Statement and the core values of mutual respect, collaboration and service orientation, multiculturalism and diversity, community service and institutional excellence.
- Experience of working with college students in recruitment and support roles, particularly first-generation college students and/or students from underserved communities
- Possess some disciplinary expertise in natural or physical sciences at B.S./B.A. or M.S. level, ideally with some working knowledge of climate change impacts in California or other coastal systems.
- Experience with maintaining organized records of grant financials and expense tracking.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the use of social media for science outreach.
- Potential interest in scientific education research.

The starting salary for this position is $75,000 for the first year, with budgeted increases thereafter for remaining three and a half years. Classification: Grade 5, Staff. This is an exempt position and as such is not eligible for the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
