JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Under the general direction of the Associate Director the Counselor works with a diverse college student population at UT Health Science Center. This position provides counseling, and consultations; facilitates groups with an emphasis on harm and risk reduction; designs, coordinates, and implements prevention initiatives for the university community; maintains and enhances clinical protocols and processes and participates in supporting training programs, including the provision of clinical supervision for eligible trainees; adheres to the professional regulations mandated by the state of Tennessee and utilizes electronic medical record software to document clinical activity. This position works with various mental health and medical providers and directly leads elements of the health promotion and prevention efforts with a specific emphasis on prevention of suicide and the use/misuse of alcohol and other drugs. Works collaboratively with the campus through the Behavioral Intervention Team (CARE Team), Wellness Officer, and other campus entities to promote student wellness and campus wide safety. This is a fully on-campus, non-hybrid position.


Responsibilities
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Conducts individual alcohol and other drug-related assessments following department guidelines and professional and ethical standards. Develops and implements appropriate educational materials to complement interventions.
  2. Facilitates psychoeducational and processes orientated counseling groups, including but not limited to judicial referral groups.
  3. Assists with the supervision of trainees. Participates in regular multidisciplinary meetings.
  4. Provides culturally responsive services to underserved populations (e.g., students from racial and ethnic minority groups, students who identify with LGBTQA+ identities and veterans, including both AOD specific counseling and general mental health counseling).
  5. Provides urgent and crisis response services. Handles walk-in crisis services and after-hours/weekend on-call coverage. Responds to emergencies in a timely manner.
  6. Participates in case consultation i.e., individual and/or group as directed and seeks assistance in matters that exceed the Counselor's level of expertise.
  7. Develops and implements a variety of paraprofessional and professional trainings, programs, presentations and workshops for the UTHSC community on various wellness topics (e.g., use/misuse of alcohol and other drugs, suicide, prevention, etc.)
  8. Facilitates workshops and trainings with students, faculty and staff. Plans events, develops, presents and evaluates materials for constituency's specific needs and goals of specific populations.
  9. Provides evaluation and assessment of students.
  10. Provides timely documentation of clinical services including monthly and annual reporting.
  11. Participates in the preparation of unit reports and federally mandated reports.
  12. Identifies program needs and provides recommendations to the Director. Facilitates, supports, and engages in Student Wellness outreach programs, trainings, and activities.
  13. Participates in weekly group and/or individual staff meetings and other staff development activities.
  14. Adheres to ethical guidelines of credentialing organization and state; HIPAA, and FERPA.
  15. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION: Master's Degree in Counseling or a related field. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of experience providing prevention, education, and treatment to college students.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: Licensed or license-eligible within one year as a Mental Health Provider or Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Tennessee. (COPY OF LICENSE/CERTIFICATION REQUIRED)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Excellent human relation and communication skills: showing ability to work with diverse populations and establish/ maintain collaborative relationships with individuals and organizations within the University.
  • Knowledge of current alcohol and other drug issues impacting health science graduate/professional students and specific higher risk groups (e.g., LGBTQA, Student Veterans, under-represented).
  • Work in alignment with the mission, vision, and strategic plan of UTHSC and co-curricular learning outcomes.
  • Demonstrated cultural competency and commitment to on-going development.
  • Creativity and imagination to envision and initiate original solutions to challenging problems.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a level of confidentiality congruent with the policies of the University and governing ethical bodies.
  • Experience in the design and implementation of training events and programs.
  • Ability to evaluate students through consultations and utilize skills to assess student needs and prepare plan for improvement.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational techniques; ability to remain calm under pressure and be able to multi-task in an extremely fast-paced environment.
  • Self-motivated, self-directed commitment to high professional ideals, and a collaborative spirit of warmth, acceptance, respect and trust towards colleagues.


WORK SCHEDULE: This position is occasionally required to work weekends and frequently required to work evenings.
