KPBS serves the greater San Diego community with informative, cultural, entertaining and educational television, radio, and web programming. KPBS TV/FM is the public television and radio station for San Diego. Licensed to San Diego State University (SDSU), KPBS supports and furthers the university's educational and community service mission by informing, enlightening and empowering its audience. It does so not only by presenting national and locally produced programming of value to its San Diego audience, but also by producing programming about San Diego and its people for distribution nationwide.
The KPBS Penner Fellow/Assistant News Producer is a temporary, one-year maximum, part-time fellowship focused on political reporting. The Penner Fellow serves as a member of the KPBS Public Matters team to create broadcast- and website-worthy content related to politics, democracy and civic engagement in the San Diego region. The position assists with broadcast news production for our television and radio broadcasts and podcasts as needed. The position is responsible for helping increase the quality of programming in our broadcasts that focus on local political and governance issues and stories that directly impact the lives of San Diegans. The Penner Fellow/Assistant News Producer will work under the direction of the Public Matters Editor, with the members of the Public Matters team and other newsroom staff.
Terms:
- Paid fellowship
- Up to one-year maximum appointment of 20 hours per week
- Working hours are weekdays, Monday-Friday

Responsibilities

Production & Administrative Support 95%
- Write broadcast news copy
- Fact check stories and review for accuracy and spelling
- Find, shoot and edit video and audio, and request/create graphics
- Conduct research and contact sources
- Post stories to KPBS.org
- Assist with special productions (live remote broadcasts, election coverage)
- Responsible for appropriate record keeping, correspondence, phone calls, supplies and equipment
Other Duties and Responsibilities as Assigned 5%

Qualifications
Knowledge and Abilities
- Ability to adhere to deadlines and, in concert with appropriate staff, make timely and effective decisions in situations requiring prompt attention
- Ability to quickly learn and apply elementary methods and procedures
- Ability to follow oral and written directions
- Ability to work cooperatively with others
- Ability to write and perform tasks appropriate for specific assigned task
- Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations
- Ability to display strong interpersonal skills
Minimum Education
- High school diploma or equivalent
Minimum Experience
- Previous experience in an office or administrative environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Currently completing or acquired bachelor's degree
- Experience in video and audio editing
- Experience in video shooting and audio recording
- Experience in TV and radio news broadcast writing
- Experience in print or online news writing
- Interest in journalism, reporting and storytelling with focus on local issues

- Candidate must reside in California and live within a commutable distance from SDSU at time of hire.
