Job Description
The College of Veterinary Medicine invites applicants to apply for the position of Laboratory Technologist, located within the Parasitology Lab of the Biomedical and Diagnostic Sciences department. The Parasitology Laboratory performs a wide variety of services and interacts with students, faculty, and staff within CVM, from referral veterinarians, zoos, and independent diagnostic service corporations. The lab is a complex environment; operations include year-round teaching, diagnostics, and research. Major goals of the lab are to provide and promote excellence in education and development, quality diagnostic services, and contribute to scholarship as a team. The position of Laboratory Technologist 1, under the direction of the Laboratory Supervisor and Laboratory Director, learns and performs diagnostic activities related to the parasitology diagnostic lab. This position requires a willingness to work with biological samples, including feces, blood, and parasitic organisms. This position is a member of the team who must work collaboratively and be familiar with the spectrum of activities used in diagnostics. Under general supervision, this position provides technical support to maintain the quality and efficiency of the Diagnostic Parasitology Laboratory by learning and performing general laboratory tasks and routine procedures on clinical specimens in the course of diagnostic testing.
Responsibilities
- Learns and performs general laboratory tasks such as sample accessioning and processing. Learns and performs routine procedures including fecal flotations, fecal egg counts, Knott's tests, Heartworm antigen tests, parasite ID, and various other serological tests on clinical diagnostic samples. Procures, analyzes, and catalogs fecal samples for use in diagnostic reference. Assists with reporting data to clinicians, veterinary students and referral DVMs by reviewing and transcribing results within published turnaround times. Provides some training of student assistants/graduate researchers on routine diagnostic procedures. Learns to operate standard laboratory equipment and specialized equipment used in parasite diagnostics. Participates in general laboratory safety training and adheres to all university and lab established safety procedures. Maintains client confidentiality and interacts professionally with veterinarians, students, staff and faculty. Performs general laboratory maintenance and organization/cleanliness. Adheres to established basic quality assurance procedures and troubleshooting while adhering to safety protocols. Adheres to proper biohazard disposal protocols.
- Collaborates with other departments, universities, state and federal administrations, and private corporations. Maintains digital records/data generated by research projects. Provides content to the photomicroscopy database from clinical samples for teaching and research. Assists with summer outreach wet labs such as 4-H.
Qualifications
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed:
- Basic knowledge of Biology, Chemistry, or related science
- Must have good communication skills
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment
- Must be able to operate basic laboratory equipment or be willing to learn operation
- Willing to learn complex assays and novel computer systems and equipment
Minimum Qualifications:
Depending on experience and qualifications of successful candidate, individual will be hired in as a Laboratory Technologist 1, Laboratory Technologist 2, Senior Laboratory Technologist 1, or Senior Laboratory Technologist 2.
Laboratory Technologist 1
- Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Wildlife Health, Animal Science, Biochemistry, or related field.
- Minimum Experience: None
- Additional Requirements: Familiarity with basic laboratory procedures.
Laboratory Technologist 2
- Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Wildlife Health, Animal Science, Biochemistry, or related field.
- Minimum Experience: 2 years of relevant experience.
Senior Laboratory Technologist 1
- Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Wildlife Health, Animal Science, Biochemistry, or related field.
- Minimum Experience: 4 years of relevant experience
Senior Laboratory Technologist 2
- Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Wildlife Health, Animal Science, Biochemistry, or related field.
- Minimum Experience: 6 years of relevant experience
The Veterinary Medical Center is operational 24 hours a day, 7 days per week, and 365 days per year. Occasional weekend, evening, or holiday work may be required of this position.

- Anticipated hiring range: $43,155.84-$49,969.92
