About the Opportunity

JOB SUMMARY

The Senior Assistant Director of Residential Life (SAD), reports to an Associate Director and is vital in creating a vibrant, inclusive, and supportive community. This position serves as a member of the Department of Residential Life's leadership team and supervises the Residence Directors and Operations Coordinators. They will directly supervise 5-7 full-time staff and indirectly supervise 50-60 student Resident Assistants.

The ideal candidate will be dedicated to student learning and innovative approaches to education. The Department of Residential Life supports over 11,000 students living on our Boston campus and this role oversees a neighborhood of approximately 2,500 students. Under the Associate Director, they will be charged with coordinating and implementing departmental decisions and directives and will process and resolve student/parent/guardian or staff concerns.

This position is student-facing and requires a dynamic individual with excellent communication skills, a passion for student development, and the ability to manage crises effectively. They will work closely with students, staff, and faculty, to create a welcoming environment that promotes student engagement and a sense of belonging.

This role requires a strong commitment to fostering an inclusive and educational environment that promotes student and staff success and well-being.

This position will be responsible for the direction of an assigned functional area within the department, often collaborating with other staff member as co-chair. Functional assignments are flexible and will be re-evaluated based on Department's needs.

Due to the live-in requirements of this position, it is required that the on-campus apartment provided must be the individual's primary residence and that person must maintain a high visibility within their residential areas of responsibility. All SADs participate in an on-call duty rotation and require the individual to work untraditional hours, including evening hours and weekends. This role also requires working some holidays and semester breaks.

This is a 12-month, full-time position. Staff may be required to help cover vacancies based on Department needs. The Department experiences peak busy times where additional support may be needed outside of traditional business hours, including opening, closing, and transition periods. This role is expected to support in "all hands are on deck" for major sporting events,

campus emergencies, campus and department events, and peak times of year when additional staffing is needed to support the needs of the community.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree required; master's degree in student personnel, higher education administration, or related field is preferred
  • Three to five professional work years. Two years preferred in Housing and Residential Life, Experience as a live-in staff member and experience supervising full-time professional staff is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in staff supervision, training, and development.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse populations and foster an inclusive community.
  • Experience with crisis management and emergency response.


RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
  • Oversee assigned functional area projects and initiatives on behalf of the Department.
  • Manage functional area budget and expenses and incorporate assessment as appropriate.
  • Supports live-in staff and contributes to community development and engagement work in buildings of oversight. Works to create a warm and welcoming community.
  • Uses social media platforms to develop/enhance community. Ensures that residential area reflects the community values. The Sr. Assistant Director is expected to attend regular programs and engagements, area RA meetings to discuss the facilitation of community, as well as attend all trainings unless excused by supervisor.
  • Coordinate arrangements for students with psychological/emotional issues.
  • Assist in the mediation of roommate conflicts; resolve parental concerns (i.e., negative group behaviors, safety and security issues, vandalism).
  • Assist professional staff with facilities-related, medical, and mental health emergencies.
  • Provide 24 hour on-call emergency response for residential community of 9,200 approximately once every couple of weeks.
