Job Description
JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The University of Tennessee Department of General Dentistry is, seeking a full-time Tenure or Non-tenure track Open rank Professor and Chair Professor of Periodontics within the College of Dentistry. This position provides oversight and strategic direction in the areas of periodontal preclinical and clinical content within the dental school pre-doctoral curriculum including periodontal examination, diagnosis, disease prevention, non-surgical therapy, and surgical therapy.

The Chair of the Department of Periodontics manages the academic and clinical programs within the department and oversees scholarship, patient care, continuing education, service, course development, faculty & staff recruitment /development, research, and pre-doctoral education. As a key member of the faculty, the position will also include opportunities for clinical and didactic teaching, research, and service to the College of Dentistry, University, and profession.


Responsibilities
  1. Recruits, hires, and mentors of faculty in the Department of Periodontics.
  2. Coaches junior and senior faculty in conducts basic and/or clinical research and other scholarly activities that will help them qualify for appropriate promotion. This includes providing sufficient time, close monitoring, and regular encouragement for these activities.
  3. Works closely with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in curriculum development and implementation.
  4. Collaborates with the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs in developing and implements clinical and academic components of the electronic dental record.
  5. Partners with informatics personnel to optimize technology use in supporting periodontics teaching programs.
  6. Coordinates didactic and clinical activities with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs.
  7. Oversees all academic programs among clinical disciplines within the department both at the school and community service learns centers.
  8. Manages accreditation processes and other program documentation as needed.
  9. Representing the Department of Periodontics at meetings of the College of Dentistry Executive Committee, appropriate campus meetings, hospital meetings, and other meetings as needed.
  10. Responds to local and national requests for information related to didactic and clinical programs.
  11. Works closely with directors of advanced periodontics programs to ensure high-quality comprehensive periodontics experiences for all residents.
  12. Participates in budget plans for the department to ensure staffing, equipment, and funding meet mission requirements.
  13. Assists the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs in quality assurance, improvement, and compliance efforts.
  14. Develops and delivers state-of-the-art continuing education programs in periodontics on a regional, statewide, or nationwide basis.
  15. Responds to assignments from various Associate/Assistant Deans and the Dean essential to department and school operations.
  16. Attends meetings representing the College internally and externally as requested by the Dean.
  17. Represents the College to external constituencies as appropriate.
  18. Performing other duties as assigned by the Dean.

Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION: DDS or DMD (or equivalent) from an ADA-accredited institution.

EXPERIENCE: At least three (3) years of full-time work experience in a dental school setting with administrative responsibilities to include development and implementation of organizational strategies and policies. The successful candidate for this position will be a strong leader who has the ability to identify and implement best practices, think strategically, plan for the long-term success of the college and effectively delegate tasks and foster a positive work environment and culture

LICENSES: Certificate of Proficiency in Periodontology. Must be licensed in State of Tennessee

DEPARTMENT PREFERENCES:
  • Board certification in Periodontology.
  • Prior dental school leadership position such as program director/division head/chairperson within academic institutions offering accredited dental programs/degrees/certifications/licenses required by regulatory authorities/governing bodies overseeing practice standards.
