Job Description
The custodial cleaning duties shall be carried out in accordance with established infection control standards, ethics of medical confidentiality, workplace safety, and as stated in the Student Health Center's policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Cleans and services assigned areas; maintain sufficient stock and supplies for the proper performance of these duties to meet health care standards.
- Washes windows, walls, and other assigned areas.
- Picks up trash, empties garbage containers and removes trash to disposal area; sanitizes trash containers as necessary to meet Health department requirements.
- Retrieves and packages infectious waste for disposition.
- Packs, unpacks, and assists in receiving, storing, issuing, and transporting cleaning materials; assists in the reconciliation of medical supply inventory.
- Reports maintenance problems to include mechanical, structural, or electrical conditions in need of repair to supervisor.
- Assists with the evacuation of patients and staff in the event of an emergency.
- Performs quality control tests and maintains quality control log for steam autoclave; Cleans autoclave as per instructions.
- Cleans contaminated areas and body fluid spills as needed. Properly disposes of sharps containers and ensures new containers are distributed.
- Discusses general housekeeping procedures with supervisor, recommends changes in procedures as needed, documents completion of duties on a nightly basis, and implements changes in cleaning methods as directed.
- Meets performance standards identified in the Infection Control, Security & Emergency Management, Life Safety, Hazardous Waste, and the Medical Utilities Management plan.
- Ensure confidentiality is maintained regarding all patient records, and clinical operations.
- Completes annual training in OSHA standards, HIPAA policies, and UTK annual required training.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Education: High School diploma or GED
- Experience: One year of full-time custodial experience
- Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Must have the ability to read, count, write, complete word processing assignments with a windows-based computer. Must maintain confidentiality. Must have the ability to bend, sweep, mop, dust, and pick items up. Must have the ability to lift 50 pounds. Must have the ability to operate electrical rotary floor cleaners and buffers. Must perform proper infection control practices.
Preferred Qualifications
- Education: High School diploma or GED and Custodial basic and supervisory certifications.
- Experience: Custodial experience in a health care facility preferred.
- Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: To have the knowledge and skill of performing infection control standards to ensure the safety of themselves, their co-workers, and Student Health employees.

Compensation and Benefits
- UT market range: MR02
- Anticipated hiring range: The salary will be determined based on previous experience and training. Shift differential pay will be paid for second shift work.
