Position Description
Performs specialized, complex work to assist in the organization and implementation of various projects and programs. Work is performed under supervision within established guidelines with performance based on overall results obtained.
Major/Essential Functions
- Run and coordinate the department's electronics shop. Consults with faculty, researchers and graduate students on the repair and maintenance of equipment.
- Perform diagnostic assessments, repairs, and maintenance on a broad array of electrical instrumentation utilized in the chemistry instructional and research laboratories.
- Diagnose RF, high voltage, analog, and digital circuit failures, utilizing standard testing equipment such as voltmeters and oscilloscopes, and perform repairs.
- Should be able to work with diverse equipment including analytical equipment such as Gas Chromatography, x-ray analytical tools, mass spectrometry, laser power supplies, infrared and UV/vis spectrometers, etc.
- Duties will include the ability to troubleshoot and diagnose on-board components, perform replacement of soldered on-board components.
- Perform computer/hardware interfacing, as required. Knowledge of basic programming for instrument control is desired.
- As needed, contribute to the design and fabrication of new specialized equipment based on the specifications and needs of the user (graduate students, faculty, and staff), including the ability to do simple board layouts and fabricate test circuits.
- Ensure effective and efficient Electronic Shop service. Manage work orders, keep records, update customers on job status, maintain test equipment, maintain an inventory of commonly used tools/parts, maintain a library of relevant information (such as repair manuals, catalogs, and technical data).
Required Qualifications
High school plus five years experience. Additional education may substitute for experience on a year for year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
Associate's degree with 2 years of experience. A combination of degree, certification, and experience will be considered in lieu of the degree requirements.
