Research Associate in the Department of Neurosurgery specializing in analyzing electrophysiological signals related to psychiatric disorders
Location: Philadelphia, PA
Open Date: Apr 17, 2025
Deadline: Apr 17, 2027 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time
The Department of Neurosurgery at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for a Research Associate position in the Academic Support Staff. This appointment will be initially for one (1) year and continuation during that time period and renewal are based on satisfactory performance and availability of funding (limited to three (3) years). Expertise is required in the specific area of electrophysiological signal analysis, including EEG and iEEG, with a focus on signal processing, neural connectivity, and time-frequency analysis in patients with psychiatric disorders. In addition, experience in computational neuroscience is essential, particularly in applying statistical modeling and machine learning techniques to large-scale neurophysiological datasets. Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree. In addition to a Ph.D., the preferred applicant must have at least 3-5 years of experience working with human electrophysiological data, including time-frequency analysis, connectivity measures, statistical modeling, and machine learning approaches for neural signal decoding and pattern recognition.
Responsibilities may include designing and executing electrophysiological signal analyses using scalp and intracranial recordings (e.g., EEG, iEEG) from patients with psychiatric disorders such as substance use disorder (SUD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD); developing signal processing and machine learning pipelines; identifying neural biomarkers of cognitive and affective dysfunction; and contributing to the preparation of scientific publications and grant proposals.
The successful applicant will have an opportunity to develop expertise in translational neurophysiology, contribute to high-impact publications, and gain experience in cross-disciplinary neuroscience research bridging clinical psychiatry, neurosurgery, computational analysis, and machine learning applications in neural data.
