Position Information
Hiring Department: Department of Mathematical Sciences

Hours: 40 hours per week, standard Monday- Friday 8:00am- 5:00pm, flexibility is required on evenings and weekends
FLSA status: Exempt
Earliest Start Date: As soon as possible.
Salary: $60,000 annually

Appointment terms and Benefits:
The expected start date of this position is as early as June 2025. This position is grant funded and subject to available funds, with the possibility of renewal for an additional year, contingent on successful performance, mutual agreement, and funding availability. This is a research-focused position with no formal teaching responsibilities; however, teaching opportunities may be available in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at UTEP during the second year. The Postdoctoral Researcher will receive health insurance, benefits, and access to professional development opportunities.

Purpose of Position
The Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position. This opportunity is funded by the DOE Energy Earthshots project, "Advanced Multi-Physics Machine Learning for Subsurface Energy Systems Across Scales."

The project aims to build computational models that enhance our understanding of physical, geomechanically, and geochemical processes occurring at multiple scales in subsurface energy storage and recovery systems.
An interdisciplinary team from five institutions (UTEP, Florida State University, University of Utah, Sandia National Lab, and Alma Energy LLC) will collaborate, integrating expertise from applied mathematics, data science, geoscience, and engineering.
Essential Functions
The Postdoctoral Researcher will join Dr. Son-Young Yi's research group at UTEP and contribute to the development of numerical models for enhanced geothermal systems and geologic carbon storage.
They will also work closely with scientists from the partnering institutions and provide mentorship to undergraduate and graduate students involved in the project.
The Postdoctoral Researcher will be involved in disseminating research findings through the publication of technical papers and presentations at scientific meetings.
They will also be responsible for preparing presentation slides for monthly PIs meetings and other project-related meetings.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
Education: PhD in applied mathematics, computational science, or any closely related field.

Preferred experience and skills:
- Finite element methods for partial differential equations
- Multiscale numerical methods
- Flow and transport in porous media
- Scientific machine learning
- Excellent programming skills in C++ and Python and experience with High Performance Computing
- Strong written and oral communication skills
